Special Education: Early Childhood Programs

The Shaker Heights Schools Early Childhood Programs is built upon a tradition of quality programming for preschool students with disabilities. Our programs are designed for 3- to 5-year-old children who display delayed development in gross or fine motor coordination, information processing, language development, self-help skills, impulse behavior and/or social development. The program provides early intervention to young children and enhances the development of readiness skills for successful learners.

The pre-school program uses the International Baccalaureate Program (IB) as part of a child-centered curriculum that supports the individual needs of each child. All IB lesson plans are aligned with the Ohio Early Learning Content Standards.

Instruction is developmentally appropriate and builds upon the strengths of each student. Planning and implementation of instruction are done collaboratively by a team of highly qualified professionals. The professionals who work in this collaborative approach are special education teachers, teacher assistants, speech therapists, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, vision specialist, music teacher, psychologist, school nurse, special education supervisor and other administrators.
