Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., became Superintendent of Shaker Heights Schools in August 2013. He leads a district known internationally for the high-quality, holistic education it provides all students.
Under Dr. Hutchings’ leadership, Shaker became one of only eight districts in North America to offer the rigorous International Baccalaureate Programme to all students at all grade levels. Through collaboration and building professional capacity, the District empowered its instructional leaders to embrace the IB philosophy, a new pedagogical framework, an evaluation protocol and cultural competency. Dr. Hutchings also collaborated with the Board of Education and community stakeholders to facilitate a strategic planning process that led to the 2014 adoption of the District's Five-Year Strategic Plan. The plan is crucial to realizing the District’s vision of being the first-choice school district for all families, both locally and around the globe.
Shaker students set the standards for academic excellence. In 2016, Shaker graduates were accepted at all Ivy League colleges as well as some of the most prestigious institutions across the country, including Howard, Julliard, MIT, the Naval Academy and Stanford. Graduates included a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, a Gates Millennium Scholar, a Coca-Cola Scholar and a Princeton Prize for Race Relations recipient. Shaker students outperform the state and national averages on the ACT and SAT by significant margins. In 2016, the High School had its highest number of Advanced Placement scholars in a decade, as well as three National Merit $2,500 Scholarships — more than any other public school in Northeast Ohio — and 27 National Merit Semifinalists and Commended students.
During his tenure at Shaker, Dr. Hutchings has worked with staff, administration and parents to launch a variety of unique programs. In 2015, through collaboration with key stakeholders, the District established the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning and Family Engagement (IC), a program that provides students the opportunity to succeed in a blended-learning environment. In 2016, Shaker launched Summer, Exploration, Learning and Fun (SELF), an expanded selection of summer options emphasizing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), world languages and personal development. In January 2016, the District established its first Office of Family and Community Engagement (FACE) to serve as a liaison with families, businesses and stakeholders. This fall, the District started Shaker’s First Class, the only preschool program in Ohio to incorporate the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme philosophy.
Before coming to Shaker Heights, Dr. Hutchings was Director of PreK-12 Initiatives for the Alexandria (Va.) City Public Schools, a diverse district outside Washington, D.C., serving about 13,000 students. In this capacity, he made instructional decisions for all middle schools; guided secondary schools through candidacy for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme; and oversaw implementation of new curricula. Dr. Hutchings held leadership roles in the public schools of Manassas, Va., and Nashville, Tenn. In 2009, he was named Tennessee Middle School Principal of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Middle Schools.
Dr. Hutchings holds a B.S. in interdisciplinary studies from Old Dominion University and a master’s in educational leadership from George Mason University. He earned a doctorate in educational policy, planning and leadership from the College of William and Mary.
As a global-minded educator, Dr. Hutchings has traveled extensively to evaluate and observe the best pedagogical practices in Switzerland, Finland and China, and has led leadership workshops on organizational culture for the International Baccalaureate Organization's office in The Hague, Netherlands.
Dr. Hutchings and his wife Cheryl, a chief financial officer, live in Shaker Heights and are the parents of two Shaker students.
