International Families

Shaker Heights has long welcomed families from all over the world. We currently enroll students from more than 30 countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Kuwait, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. Our teachers and students appreciate the rich cultural mix that our international families bring to our community and schools.

The Shaker Heights City School District offer a world of opportunities, including:

  • The International Baccalaureate Programme from PreK-12, which gives students a rigorous curriculum, a global outlook, and an edge in admission to colleges and universities all over the world.
  • An Advanced Placement program that offers college-level coursework in calculus, economics, history, physics, English, and biology, among others.
  • A Spanish language program for all students in Grades 1-4. Students in Grades 5 take introductory language courses Spanish, French, German and Chinese before selecting a world language to study beginning in Grade 6.
  • A robust English Language Learners program serving about 200 students.
  • International travel opportunities including student and faculty exchanges with “sister schools” in China, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany and Japan.
  • Working relationships with Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, NASA, the Cleveland Museum of Art and other educational, scientific and cultural organizations.

Family Classes

Adult English Language Classes
Plymouth Church, 2860 Coventry Road at Drexmore Road, Shaker Heights
This class takes place in room 102. Adult English Language Classes meet weekly on Tuesdays from 10-11:30AM beginning September 5th, 2017. No children, please. You do not have to attend each week. The classes are very informal and are taught by Carole Lee. Registration is not required - just come and have fun. There is no fee. Your friends and relatives are welcome to attend the classes, too. A free ESL Program for those seeking to learn to read and speak English meets from 7:00-8:30PM every Tuesday in a meeting room on the 2nd floor. The class is taught by Carolyn Steiner and other volunteer tutors. Please email Carolyn at [email protected] or call the library at 216-991-2030 for more details.
