Watch the "Superintendent's Series: Detracking" Panel Discussion

October 13, 2023—On Thursday, October 12, approximately 150 community members and staff members attended a panel discussion on detracking, the first of a three-part Superintendent’s Series on the subject. The 2 1/2 -hour event took place at Shaker Heights High School.

The panel featured Evanston Township (Illinois) High School Superintendent Dr. Marcus Campbell; Dr. Amanda Yurick, Associate Professor in Special Education at Cleveland State University; District Director of Curriculum & Instruction Dr. John Moore; Middle School math teacher Karlee Robinson; and two students, juniors B’Lise Bradley and Madeline Moore.

The panel discussion included a detailed exchange of ideas about detracking including the rollout and implementation of the initiative, research, public engagement and challenges. Each panelist spoke about detracking from their own personal experience as educators, researchers and students. The panel discussion was followed by a question-and-answer session from the audience.

The Superintendent’s Series will include two upcoming classroom simulation sessions:

  • On October 23 at the Middle School, attendees will have the opportunity to experience a math class as students. Participants will experience how differentiation can serve different students experiencing the same lesson.
  • On November 1 at Woodbury Elementary School, attendees will have the opportunity to experience a language & literature class as students. Participants will experience how differentiation can serve different students experiencing the same lesson.
