A Message from Superintendent Dr. David Glasner

December 14, 2022—The State Board of Education voted Tuesday to approve an amended resolution that would remove certain protections for LGBTQ+ students. In doing so, the state board pushed back on the federal government’s plan to include protections for LGBTQ+ students in broader Title IX protections.

I am writing this message today to affirm that, here in Shaker Heights, we are committed to supporting students of all identities and will continue to provide a safe and welcoming space for all students and families.

This past Monday, Board of Education Vice President Heather Weingart traveled to Columbus to urge the State Board of Education to reject this resolution. Despite similar testimony from hundreds of educators, board members and parents, the amended resolution was approved by a 10-7 vote. On Tuesday night, Ms. Weingart condemned the state board’s action as both unfair and unwarranted.

In her statement, Ms. Weingart wrote: “We will continue to work with an equity lens to provide an environment that is safe and welcoming for ALL our students regardless of race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The District remains steadfastly committed to creating safe spaces and a sense of belonging for all students, families and staff. I look forward to supporting our students together.

Sincerely,
Dr. David Glasner
