John Rizzo to Head Technology and Media Services

John J. Rizzo, Information and Communication Technology Coordinator for the Mayfield City Schools, has been selected as Director of Technology and Media Services for the Shaker Heights City School District, effective July 1. In this role, he will set the direction and priorities for technology and library media services for the District, with a focus on supporting the curriculum and integrating technology into instruction. He will also provide oversight for technology-based business functions throughout the District.

Rizzo holds a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems as well as a master’s degree in instructional technology, both from Kent State University. He has provided computer technology and information support for the Mayfield schools since 2003. His prior experience includes programming and application development for a software publisher in North Canton.

In his current role at the Mayfield schools, Rizzo was instrumental in developing a district-wide technology institute to provide learning options for students and teachers. He also chaired an assistive technology team to enhance learning for students with special needs, conducted pilot programs to assess emerging technologies in the K-12 school environment, and helped create a basic computer skills program for students in grades K-2. (For further background information, download his application below.)

“Mr. Rizzo’s expertise in technology and information services as they relate to K-12 education, as well as his creative thinking and problem-solving, will be tremendously beneficial to the Shaker schools,” said Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., Superintendent of Schools. “His skills will help us provide technology offerings to enhance instruction and provide support for both students and staff members.”

Rizzo succeeds Kathy Fredrick, who is retiring after 13 years in Shaker.
