Fernway Students Welcome New American Citizens
On December 7, Fernway fourth graders attended a Naturalization Ceremony at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Cleveland and welcomed 130 new American citizens from more than 20 countries with homemade cards and beaded bracelets. These trips were part of two IB units of inquiry that cultivate an understanding of immigration and migration as well as decisions that promote or deny justice. A special thanks to the Shaker Schools Foundation for funding the trip and to PTO liaison Dorothy Moulthrop, who helped to organize it. Well done, students!

Teacher Susie Rainier said the experience gave students the opportunity to work on valuable life and social skills, including shopping for the items, preparing the food, setting and clearing the tables and accepting payment, among others. The students plan to serve lunch each month to continue to raise money. The chili was delicious...we can't wait to sample what you make next month!
