MS, Woodbury Delegates Practice Diplomacy at Model UN

More than 100 Shaker Heights Middle School and Woodbury students represented 16 countries at the Ohio Leadership Institute’s Junior Ohio Model UN conference last week.

31 resolutions out of 158 were selected for debate in the General Assembly and 12 Outstanding Resolution Trophies were awarded.  One eighth-grade team from Shaker won an Outstanding Resolution Trophy.  There were also five individual contests held during the conference.  Shaker Heights Middle School students won two of the contests and finished third in another one.  1200 students competed in these events, which emphasized leadership development.  Shaker students won two offices and will help run the conference next year.

Rachel Raddock - First Place in the Global Agenda Issues Contest (Topic: Terrorism)

Kevin Jiang - First Place in the World Citizenship Contest (Topic: How Do We Rebuild After a Natural Disaster?)

Griffin Walsh - Third Place in the Current Events Contest

Shaker Heights High School student Kevin LaMonica served as the Assistant Secretary General.

The Jim Caffrey Outstanding 6th Grade Nation award was given to Tuvalu, a group of young students from Wyoming Middle School near Cincinnati.  

Mike Sears and Jackie Abrams are the club’s advisors at the Middle School.  Ruth Heide and Rob Kaminski advise the Woodbury club.
