Bringing the Strategic Plan to Life

The Shaker Experience -- incorporating academics, the arts, co-curricular activities, the learning environment, and preparation for the future -- is the central goal of the District's Strategic Plan.

On Monday evening, a team of educators will update the Board of Education on how the Strategic Plan is beginning to bring about changes in the Shaker Experience in each of these areas:

   • International Baccalaureate
   • Effective teaching practices
   • Academic supports
   • Assessment and data
   • Curriculum development
   • Expectations for student behavior
   • Barriers to student learning
   • Learning environment
   • Experiences beyond the classroom

“A strategic plan is, by its nature, a somewhat dry and abstract document,” said Dr. Marla J. Robinson, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “We are taking this opportunity to bring the plan to life by sharing the work of our teachers and principals and its impact on students.”

For example, staff members will describe and demonstrate changes in the math curriculum at the elementary and middle school levels. Other topics to be covered include International Baccalaureate, technology, effective teaching practices, current areas of emphasis in professional learning, and grading and homework practices.

“Our intention is to provide a snapshot of where we are each of these areas,” Robinson said.

The public is invited to the work session, which begins at 6 p.m. in the High School Small Auditorium.
