The formation of the Equity Task Force is a key part of the District's Five-Year Strategic Plan. Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., Superintendent of Schools, has charged the Task Force with the task of exploring the assets and challenges of embracing and moving toward equity for all students in the Shaker Heights City School District, with a focus on removing barriers to student success and helping children of all races and life experiences achieve at high levels.
The Task Force will define what equity means within our District and will evaluate equity as it relates to our:
Over the course of its work, the Task Force will study data, talk to a broad base of stakeholders and experts, and make recommendations to our Board of Education with the goal of establishing a district-wide equity policy and action plans.
- Racial disparity and achievement gap
- Underrepresentation of minorities in advanced-level courses
- Educator workforce diversity
- Gifted education programs
- International families
- LGBTQ community
- Special education programs
The Task Force includes 11 educators, nine community members and two students. These members will serve a two-year term. The formation of this group and its ability to continuously foster equity through the coordinated efforts of our schools, our community and our young people is an important step to ensuring that the dialogue we have on equity is not only productive, but lasting.
