Section 504

Section 504 is an anti-discrimination law to protect the rights of students with disabilities. The definition of a student with a disability under Section 504 is different from the definition of a student with a disability under IDEA. Under Section 504, a student with a disability is defined as:

  1. A student with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity
  2. A student with a record of such an impairment, or
  3. A student who is regarded as having such an impairment.

Some students who are defined as having a disability under Section 504 are also eligible for a 504 Plan. The purpose of a 504 Plan is to ensure that the needs of a student with a disability are met as adequately as those of a non-disabled student.

If you believe that your student may have a disability under Section 504, please contact your building principal or school counselor.
