Language Acquisition

At Shaker Heights Schools, the study of world languages prepares students to understand and appreciate diversity in language and culture, both locally and globally, and lead them to become responsible world citizens. 

Beginning in Kindergarten, students receive Spanish instruction as a part of their single-subject class rotation. By the time students reach sixth grade into their High School years, world language studies begin to include course choices in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, French, German and Latin.

But Language Acquisition at Shaker Heights Schools goes beyond memorization. Students have opportunities to learn about the history and culture of their chosen language studies through real-world applications, including international travel and cultural experiences.

Witnessing History


Shaker Heights High School students in advanced German — led by teachers Keith Szalay and Andrea Bradd Cook — were tapped by the Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland to translate the memoir of Max Reiner.

Renier, a Jewish-German journalist who lived and worked in Berlin, was an eyewitness to some of the most significant cultural and political events in pre-World War II Germany from 1904 until 1938 when he and his family escaped to Palestine. 

“It’s projects like this that give our students an opportunity to learn by doing,” said Mr. Juli, whose grandparents were Holocaust survivors. “Our students can connect with history while doing something meaningful for the community.”

The translated work will be presented to Max Reiner's family and to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, where our High School German students will be recognized for contributing to the museum’s collection.

Cultural Connections

Students gathered around African drummers


Students in the Shaker Heights City School District's Language Acquisition programs have the opportunity to learn about the cultures associated with their chosen course of language study.

Spanish students have learned about flamenco dancing, French students have participated in African drumming and Mandarin students have celebrated the Lunar New Year, immersing themselves in the traditions and practices of these cultures. Additionally, language teachers often integrate cultural stories, cuisine and celebrations into their curriculum to provide a more comprehensive cultural experience.

These cultural connections enhance language skills and help students learn about cultures and influences across the globe, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of global diversity. 

Global Exploration


Studying a language at Shaker Heights Schools can bring the opportunity to travel to different countries and experience diverse cultures firsthand. These travel programs are designed to complement the in-class language learning experience by immersing students in the environments where their chosen languages of study are spoken. This immersion helps students to practice their language skills in real-world settings, enhancing their fluency and cultural understanding. Students gain valuable insights into the daily lives, traditions, and customs of the people in these countries, which greatly enriches their educational journey.

These trips have included exciting destinations such as Quebec (Canada), Germany, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, France, and many more.

These experiences are pivotal in shaping students into well-rounded, culturally competent individuals who are prepared to engage in an interconnected global community.
