Early Literacy
Early literacy is fundamental for children's development, shaping their academic success and emotional intelligence.
Through reading, students gain language skills, vocabulary, and comprehension abilities crucial for future learning. Literacy empowers them to express themselves confidently and engage meaningfully with the world. Shaker Heights Schools prioritizes early literacy support for our youngest learners, ensuring every student has the tools to succeed academically and beyond.

Literacy Tips for Families
Decoding
- Encourage students to get their mouths ready
- Read the sounds through the whole word
- Segment the sounds as needed and then blend together(ex: /d/o/g/ and then “dog”).
- Use a mirror to show students what their mouths should look like with trouble spots
- After decoding the word “dog”, as an example, use the rule of 3.
- Say three quick things about this word to start developing meaning: 1. Dogs can be a pet 2. Dogs have four legs 3. Dogs communicate by barking
Print Awareness
Discourage students from using the picture to read the words. Consider covering up the pictures to pay attention to actually reading the words.
Vocabulary
Talk about the meaning of words and how they can change based on the context. The more language you use with learners the more exposed they are to words. Purposely use different words throughout the day.
Comprehension
Read books together that may be too hard for your reader on their own. This is an opportunity to build meaning, vocabulary, and knowledge.
