A Message About Today's Events

Dear Shaker Heights Schools Families, Students and Staff,

The images of the rioting and violence that took place this afternoon at the United States Capitol Building, and the divisiveness and vitriol that led up to it, are deeply troubling and disturbing.

As a District with a history of peaceful protests, a willingness to work together with people of different backgrounds and a commitment to teaching our students to be open-minded, civically engaged and caring, we condemn today’s events.

My hope is that the future leaders of our nation—many of whom will be educated here in Shaker Heights—are inspired by our words and our actions to do better and to persist toward the ideals of democracy.

Yesterday, the newly elected U.S. Senator from Georgia, Rev. Raphael Warnock, said, “I know we can move closer to justice with empathy and understanding, passion and purpose.”

May all of our country’s leaders work together to achieve this vision.

We know that today’s events and scenes can be confusing and scary, especially for younger children. We invite you to review the following resources to help you talk with them about today’s events:

In addition, school staff are available to provide additional support for any student or staff member who needs it.

I am hopeful that common sense, stability and peaceful discourse will prevail as we navigate through this dark moment.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Glasner, Superintendent
Shaker Heights Schools
