SHHS Junior Madeleine McKenney Wins Local Shakespeare Contest

Junior Madeleine McKenney

March 24, 2021—Congratulations to Shaker Heights High School juniors Madeleine McKenney and Ben Rakow for earning first and second place, respectively, in the 2021 Cleveland Branch of the English Speaking Union's (ESU) Shakespeare Monologue contest. Students were judged on submitted video performances of Shakespeare’s monologues and sonnets.

Madeleine’s video will be part of the ESU National Competition, held in New York City on April 26. The ESU National Shakespeare Competition is a performance-based educational program serving students in grades 9-12. Approximately 2,500 teachers and 20,000 students in nearly 60 ESU Branch communities participate each year.

Madeleine, Ben and their teacher, Mr. Scott Sumerak, will each receive a $50 prize from the Cleveland Branch.

Congratulations, Madeleine and Ben!
