Michael Babinec to Succeed Don Readance as Interim Athletic Director
Mike BabinecAugust 6, 2020—Shaker Heights Schools announces that Shaker Heights High School Varsity Baseball Head Coach and English Teacher Michael Babinec has been named Interim Athletic Director. Mr. Babinec has served as Assistant Athletic Director for the past eight years and succeeds Don Readance, who will return to teaching Physical Education at Shaker Heights High School and serving as an assistant Girls’ Basketball Coach.

Mr. Babinec has worked at Shaker Heights Schools for 20 years. He began his career at Shaker Heights Middle School, where he taught English, served as the English Department Chair and coached both basketball and baseball. This year, Mr. Babinec begins his fourteenth year at Shaker Heights High School, where he has taught English and served as the Varsity Baseball Head Coach for 15 years. He will step away from his teaching position this year to focus on athletics. Mr. Babinec earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from John Carroll University, where he also was a member of the Varsity Baseball Team.

High School Physical Education Teacher Marc Enie will join Mr. Babinec on the Athletic Department staff and will serve as the Interim Assistant Athletic Director.

“We are so grateful to Don Readance for his fourteen years of leadership over our High School athletic programming,” says Shaker Heights Schools Superintendent David Glasner. “Don leaves athletics well positioned to succeed moving forward, particularly with his efforts to help rebuild the High School Sports Boosters. We wish him all the best as he transitions back to his first passion of teaching and coaching.”

During Mr. Readance’s tenure, Shaker Heights High School won state championships in hockey, field hockey and boys’ diving. He also partnered with the Shaker Schools Foundation for the renovation of Raider Hall and oversaw planning for the new Raider Athletic Center and Wrestling Room projects, both of which will come to fruition this fall.

“It’s been a pleasure working with our awesome group of coaches and student athletes and experiencing all their special moments. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with students in the classroom, coaching girls basketball and spending more time with my family,” said Mr. Readance. “Our athletics program is in terrific hands with the combination of Mike’s fresh ideas, the Sports Boosters progress and Principal Juli’s leadership.”
