An Important Message about Wednesday's Violence in Uvalde, Texas
May 25, 2022

Dear Shaker Schools Community and Staff,

We are horrified and angered by the senseless slaughter of 18 children and three adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and community of Uvalde.

In keeping with heightened security across the nation, the Shaker Heights Police Department will break up into zones and have a presence around all of our schools today and later this week if needed. The Shaker Heights City School District also recently received state grant funding to enhance the security infrastructure at all eight of our school buildings. These grants, announced just last week, will help to make our buildings safer until they can be more comprehensively upgraded to meet the modern safety and security standards.

Counselors will be available for students and staff at all schools to discuss these events.Additionally, the National Association of School Psychologists provides tips for talking to your child about violence.

Here are some other resources that may support families and educators:

Schools should provide a safe and nurturing place for our children, a space that fosters learning, discovery and fun. Unthinkable acts, like the shooting in Uvalde and other recent mass shootings, demand more than thoughts and prayers.  Please reach out to  elected officials to support responsible gun laws and other protections for children and staff in our schools.
