March 1, 2023—I am pleased to announce that beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, the District will be installing lights for year-round use at the Shaker Heights High School athletic stadium.
For the past two fall seasons, the District has experimented with temporary lights at the stadium for practices, games and meets. The presence of lights has been met with overwhelming approval by the community. In December, more than 90 percent of the respondents to a District survey voiced approval of stadium lights. A survey after the 2021 fall season yielded similar results.
The District recognizes concerns about traffic, parking and other issues that have been raised by some residents living near the stadium. For this reason, the District is developing guidelines that will help establish some expectations for when and how lights will be used. We will also continue to do our best to hold a wide range of athletic and other events in ways that minimize any disruptions in the neighborhood around the high school.
Given the District’s ongoing long-term facilities planning discussions, it is important to note that these lights will be moveable, should the need arise.
We believe that lights at the stadium will continue to be a rewarding experience for our students, our families and our entire community.
