Winter Weather Safety Reminders from the Shaker Heights Schools Transportation Department

January 30, 2022—The Shaker Heights Schools Transportation Department would like to remind families of these important winter weather safety tips:

  • Students need to keep warm while waiting at the bus stop, but they also must still be able to see and hear what is going on around them. Please make sure they are able to hear the traffic when using scarves, hats and earmuffs. We also encourage gloves and appropriate footwear for the conditions.
  • Roads and sidewalks may be slippery. Allow extra time to get to the bus stop. Please remember, students must be at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time of the bus. Bus drivers count the students at the bus stop before they load and as they get on the bus to ensure all children are safely on board. If students are not waiting at the bus stop the bus driver cannot count them and cannot be certain the students are all safely on board. Please remind students never to chase the bus.
  • Students should wait for the bus at the driver's designated place of safety, not inside the residence or a vehicle. This location will be at least 10 feet or 10 giant steps away from the roadway. Please do not allow your children to wait in the street as this is extremely dangerous.
  • Please remind students not to horseplay at the bus stop. When snow hits the ground, students may be tempted to play in it, but snowballs can cause serious injuries. Please also discourage them from climbing on snowbanks.
  • Our school bus drivers are very well trained to drive in inclement weather; however, snow and icy conditions can slow down our school bus drivers. Safety is our number one priority and extra time may be needed to get from stop to stop. We appreciate your patience with us during this winter weather.
  • We will always do our best to communicate bus delays and route changes through Here Comes The Bus. For more information regarding Here Comes The Bus, please click here.
