SGORR Launches Elementary Community Spaces for K-6 Families

The Student Group on Race Relations is committed to fostering and supporting relationships across social boundaries. This month, SGORR is excited to launch Elementary Community Spaces to the Shaker Heights community. Any Shaker family that has a child in Kindergarten through 6th Grade, is encouraged to join.

These spaces are intended for parents and elementary students (Grades K-6) to work together to make their community more anti-racist. Families will have the opportunity to learn about racism and how it looks within their local community. Families will work with one another to create and execute an anti-racist actionable project. This process consists of three sessions -- the first two sessions are a week apart.

  • Session 1: SGORR leaders and members will facilitate a conversation with parents to educate them on systematic racism and how it looks in the community. This session is for parents only.
  • Session 2: SGORR leaders and members will facilitate activities with K-6 students to educate them on various race related issues
  • Session 3: Families will work together to create and start executing their anti-racist actionable project. This session will be scheduled collaboratively by the participating families.

In between Session 1 and 2, families also will be given tabletop discussion prompts. It is highly encouraged for families to commit to all three sessions and the execution of the anti-racist actionable project.

These engaging spaces will take place at a person's home, other community space or virtual. All in-person sessions will adhere to masking and physical-distancing guidelines.

SGORR Elementary Community Spaces will be publicly promoted. Any family within Shaker Heights is welcome to join, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical ability, religion, nationality or socioeconomic status.

If your family or a family you know are interested in participating, please fill out this form. For any questions or concerns please contact Tiara Sargeant at [email protected]
