Shaker Heights Schools, PTO to Celebrate MLK Day with Virtual Learning, Engagement

December 30, 2020—A Celebration of Beloved Community in Honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., coordinated by the Shaker Heights PTO and community partners, begins January 4, 2021, with a 14-day focus on the life and teachings of Dr. King and culminates on MLK Day with an opportunity for community engagement.
This sixth-annual District-wide event that traditionally focuses on a day of service and community-building is being reimagined for the virtual setting. Shaker Heights Schools students will receive a mailed learning guide, funded by the Shaker Schools Foundation. Community members may also engage in the daily topics and resources through a digital flipbook on shakerpto.org.
“All the issues that Dr. King dedicated his life to—achieving social and economic justice for all, embracing Blackness and ending systemic racism—continue to persist today,” says Dr. JeffriAnne Wilder, Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “This Celebration gives our students the opportunity to learn about Dr. King and to take action that makes a difference in our community and beyond.”

Additional activities include:
  • A city-wide donation drive benefiting family-focused service organizations in the community. The donations will be collected at Shaker Heights Middle School from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday, January 18.

  • A livestream Celebration with a Cause at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 18. Listen to inspiring messages, hear calls to action and see beautiful performances.
