District Shares Guidance on Coronavirus Preparedness

February 27, 2020—Today, Shaker Heights Schools informed families about the measures that the District is taking to respond to the recent global outbreak of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus. This past Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released information for schools about coronavirus prevention. We have reviewed these federal guidelines as well as the Ohio Department of Health's recommendations regarding coronavirus in schools.

Health officials currently recommend a series of common-sense protections for our students, staff and community:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Stay at home if you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

While the threat of the coronavirus impacting American schools remains unknown, we continue to work with government and health care agencies to develop coronavirus response plans. We are also reviewing all District-sponsored international travel, including student exchange programs.

We will continue to update you on our efforts as well as developments involving this health concern.
