SHHS Students Participate in Virtual 2020 National Latin Convention

August 3, 2020—Congratulations to the following five Shaker Heights High School students who recently participated in the virtual 2020 National Latin Convention: Class of 2020 graduates Craig Bush, Hannah Shane and Matt Schiavone; rising senior Max Carroll; and rising juniors Will Corbin and Ellen Keefe. Nearly one thousand students and teachers attended and participated in online activities and competitions.

SHHS student highlights include:

Craig Bush ‘20, Ohio’s outgoing Northern Gubernator, checked out many of the social activities offered for both high school and college students,  reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. He also earned a 4th place in Greek Language.

Max Carroll ‘21, incoming Latin Club co-consul, played on Shaker’s Agon (Greek Jeopardy) team. He was recognized for his four Gold Medals on the National Latin Exam.

Will Corbin ‘22, repeating Latin Club co-consul, played both Agon and Certamen (Latin Jeopardy), racking up many points for both teams.  He also took home top five awards in Greek Language and Latin Reading Comprehension and earned a cum laude award for his essay.

Ellen Keefe ‘22, repeating Latin Club co-treasurer, entered the Art Portfolio and Impromptu Art contests, earning magna cum laude awards in both.  

Matt Schiavone ‘20, Latin Club’s outgoing communications coordinator, captained the Ohio Certamen team as well as the Agon team, contributing many points in both competitions. Matt took first place in the Greek Language, third place in Mythology and fifth place in Greek Derivatives. Matt was recognized for his five gold awards on the National Latin Exam.

Hannah Shane ‘20, Ohio’s outgoing Editor, took eighth place in the publications contest, in absentia, for her publication, The Ohio Torch. 

The Agon team, having finished second in their semi-final round, finished in seventh place overall. The Certamen team narrowly missed making the semi-finals.
