2020-21 School Year Remote Learning Supervision/Childcare FAQ

Earlier today, families with students in Grades K-6 received information on remote learning supervision/childcare services for the 2020-21 school year. Please review this FAQ for additional information. This information will be updated online on the District’s 2020-21 School Year Plan Frequently Asked Questions page as more information becomes available.

Why is the District providing remote learning supervision/childcare in school buildings this fall when our buildings aren’t open for all students?

In the course of planning for remote learning during the 2020-21 school year, many District families expressed concerns about childcare options for parents/guardians who were essential workers or who were not able to work from home. To help those families, the District has contracted with Champions, a third-party childcare provider, to provide a fee-based remote learning supervision. Space in this program is very limited to allow for physical distancing. We are working to provide fee assistance for families with students who qualify for free/reduced-price meals. The District explored the limited number of existing options and, based on the information available, determined that these services could be offered on a very limited basis in our school buildings.

Who is eligible for remote learning supervision/childcare?

Only students in Grades K-6 who are enrolled in Shaker Heights Schools or children of employees who are in Grades K-6 are eligible. Given the limited capacity, we ask that families kindly consider alternatives to this remote learning supervision/childcare program so that parents/guardians who are essential workers and/or who cannot work from home can utilize this option.

How much is remote learning supervision/childcare cost?

The cost for full-day supervision is $225/week (every day for six hours or more). The cost for half-day supervision is $150/week (every day for six hours or less). Students will be grouped in small pods. We are working to provide fee assistance for families with students who qualify for free/reduced-price meals.

What is included in remote learning supervision/childcare?

The weekly fee includes breakfast; students may bring lunch or purchase a lunch from AVI for $3/day.

Will transportation be provided?

No. Parents/guardians are responsible for providing transportation.

When does remote learning supervision/childcare begin?

We currently expect the program to begin on Tuesday, September 8.

What time of day is remote learning supervision/childcare available?

Students may be dropped off as early as 7 a.m. and must be picked up by 6 p.m.

Where will remote learning supervision/childcare be located?

This service will be provided at District buildings, however, specific locations have not been determined.

How do I register for remote learning supervision/childcare?

Families will enroll directly with Champions. To help with planning, the District asks that families who are interested in registering for this service complete the 2020-21 School Year Childcare Interest Form.
