September 23, 2020—Thirteen members of the Shaker Heights High School Class of 2021 were named National Merit Semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program and additional nine students were named National Merit Commended Students.
Shaker Heights High School had the second-highest number of National Merit Semifinalists among Northeast Ohio public high schools and the seventh-highest among all of Ohio’s public high schools. This Semifinalist group represents the largest number of Semifinalists from Shaker Heights High School since 2016.
Both Semifinalists and Commended Students qualified for their respective programs by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The seniors who were named Semifinalists are among the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The seniors who were named Commended Students are among the country's 34,000 PSAT high performers.
The national group of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of the U.S. high school seniors and the highest-scoring entrants in each state. All Semifinalists will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million, offered next spring.
