Inclement Weather Reminders for Families and Staff

January 7, 2023—Now that winter has arrived, we wanted to remind you about the Shaker Heights City School District’s school closing, early dismissal and delayed opening communications and procedures. We also ask that you review our tips on getting to school safely

School Closing and Delayed Opening Procedures
In the event of a school closing, early dismissal or delayed opening, the District will notify families using as many channels as possible, including:
  • Automated calls
  • E-mail
  • Text Notifications
  • District website (shaker.org)
  • District social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
  • News media

As power or internet outages could affect one or more of these systems, we encourage you to monitor more than one of these communication channels. Remember: If it didn't come from the District, it's not official.

Families and staff will be notified of a closing or delayed opening the night before if possible, and by 5:30 a.m. at the latest.

A delayed opening may be used on days when weather or road conditions make it inadvisable to start school at the usual time, but it is possible to open when conditions improve. Delayed opening means a two-hour delay in school starting times and morning bus runs.

Please familiarize yourself with the District’s Delayed Opening Procedures and develop a family plan so that children will be safe at home and en route to school on delayed-opening days. Your family's plan will vary depending on your family circumstances and the maturity of your children. View our Delayed Opening Procedures to learn more about bus pickup times, breakfast food service changes, before-school care and more.
