Shaker Heights City School District Continues to Exceed State Standards on 2025-2026 State Report Card
- District News
For the fourth consecutive year, the District earned an overall rating of four stars on the annual State Report Card, which was released Tuesday, September 15, by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. A four-star rating means the District exceeded state standards.
Districts and schools receive overall ratings, which are comprised of six rated components: Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Early Literacy, Graduation Rate and College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness. Early Literacy applies to elementary buildings only, whereas Graduation Rate and College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness (CCWMR) only apply to the high school.
The District met or exceeded state standards in five of the six rated components. Highlights included:
- Five Stars in Graduation Rate: The District significantly exceeded state standards, increasing from four to five stars for its Graduation Rate. This metric combines four-year and five-year graduation rates.
- Strong Algebra I Performance: District eighth-graders are passing Algebra I at a rate exceeding other ninth-graders across the state, meaning they are earning high school credit in the eighth grade and are entering high school prepared for advanced math courses.
- Five Stars in Gap Closing: The District significantly exceeded achievement expectations for most student subgroups, resulting in an increase to five stars in this component. This reflects continued progress in reducing learning gaps and improving student attendance between and among different groups of students.
- Four Stars in Progress: The District earned four stars in the Progress component, meaning there is significant evidence that the District exceeded student growth expectations. This component included the “value-added” measurement, which compares current achievement to prior achievement.
- Three Stars in Early Literacy: The District maintained three stars for early literacy, meeting State standards in K-3 literacy. This year, the State changed the metric for Promotion to Fourth Grade, which is weighted at 35% of the Early Literacy components. As a result, some districts may have experienced a drop in their early literacy rating as a whole. Under Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee, parents have the ultimate authority to decide whether their child is promoted to the fourth grade if the student does not meet the state's required reading score. While parental decisions previously counted toward the promotion score, students must now meet test score requirements to be included in the Promotion to Fourth Grade measure.
- Continued Focus on CCWMR: The District continues to work to improve its score in the CCWMR category, which is a lagging indicator because it uses data from prior school years.
These report card results reflect the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, students and families. While the State Report Card is only one measure of academic performance, the District’s strong results are a testament to the collective effort happening across schools and the continued commitment to providing every student with opportunities to succeed.
