Local Youth Sports Programming

The Shaker Heights High School Athletics Department shares this list of Local Youth Sports Programs so that families can learn more about sports and fitness opportunities for children.


All of the information in the list has been submitted by local teams and programs and does not indicate endorsement, recommendation or favoring by Shaker Heights Schools or its Athletics programs.


Local sports programs that wish to be included in this list should complete this Sports Programming Information Form. All responses will be reviewed by the Athletic Department. 


Level the Playing Field Scholarships through the Shaker Schools Foundation provide financial assistance to students in grades 1-12 to participate in youth team sports affiliated with the Shaker Heights Recreation Department and Shaker Youth Sports. Learn more here.

Baseball

Shaker Youth Baseball League (SYBL)

Shaker Youth Baseball League (S.Y.B.L.) is a non-profit, community based recreational program in Shaker Heights, targeting boys and girls in PreK through Grade 11 with T-ball, coach pitch and baseball leagues by grade level. S.Y.B.L has been a volunteer-led organization for more than 30 years, providing an inclusive and affordable opportunity for community-based baseball that operates in tandem with the goals, philosophy, and values of our local schools and recreation department.

DNA Travel Baseball

DNA Travel Baseball is a non-profit, cost-covering, community-based baseball program offering a multi-dimensional off-season and summer baseball experience targeting Shaker residents. We provide an inclusive and affordable opportunity for competitive baseball that operates in tandem with the philosophies and best practices of our local schools regarding youth athletics. Our mission is to use youth athletics as a vehicle for unifying diverse populations and binding community members together.

Basketball

Resilient AAU Travel Basketball
Resilient AAU Travel Basketball is a program that allows athletes to compete across Northeast Ohio and at times out of state against other AAU organizations. The tournaments start in March and run through the beginning of June. More advanced teams may play and compete into the months of June and July.

Shaker Heights Recreation Department

The Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers year-round basketball programs for all children including Bitty Basketball (age 4), the Junior Raider Pee Wee Instruction Program (ages 5-8), and the Junior Raider Basketball League and travel team for girls in Grades 5 & 6. The department also offers 3v3 basketball for girls and boys in Grades 3-6, as well as multiple weeks of basketball camp during the summer for Grades 1-7.

Field Hockey

Shaker Field Hockey Association
Shaker Field Hockey Association (SFHA) is a community-based recreational program in Shaker Heights, targeting athletes in grades 2-12. SFHA offers clinics, camps, small group and 1:1 coaching opportunities to develop athletes in the Cleveland community. Programs focus on development of athlete skill fundamentals, tactical thinking and game play.

Field Hockey Life (FHL) 
Field Hockey Life's nationally recognized training program has opportunities for U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19 athletes of all levels in Cleveland, OH. As Ohio’s premier field hockey club, FHL provides high quality training opportunities, and develops confident athletes that can compete on the field with respect and honor, teaching life lessons that reach beyond the pitch. Throughout the year FHL offers a variety of options for players of all skill levels and interests.

Happy Hockey (HH) 
Happy Hockey is a community-based field hockey program that uses the sport to inspire our youth to be more confident, be strong teammates, and instill a variety of leadership qualities using an experience-based curriculum. Shaker is a host site for Happy Hockey, offering clinics throughout the year.  At Happy Hockey, athletes will learn basic field hockey skills, participate in small-sided games, learn positive life lessons, and have tons of fun!

Flag Football

We provide youth Tackle Football and Flag Football for ages 5-12 yrs old.

Hockey

Shaker Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) 
SYHA is a non-profit that works in partnership with Shaker Heights Recreation Department to support the youth hockey program for skaters from ages 5-14. We provide support to ensure an affordable and inclusive opportunity for all interested. The City program includes year-round skating and skills development, team competition, and other hockey-related activities. This program emphasizes the development of athletes of all abilities and promotes community and sportsmanship. Come and make lifelong friends playing the coolest game on Earth.

Shaker Heights Recreation Department

The Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers year-round opportunities for future and current hockey players ages 5-14. Beginning skaters can participate in Learn to Skate classes, including Hockey 1-4 classes which are tailored specifically to future hockey players. Youth teams, which participate in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League, are offered at the Mighty Mite through Bantam age levels. The youth hockey season runs through the fall and winter, and in the spring and summer players have the opportunity to participate in a variety of hockey clinics and camps.

Ice Skating

Shaker Heights Recreation Department

The Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers year-round Learn to Skate classes for children of all ages and skill levels. Snowplow Sam classes are tailored to ages 3-5, and Basic Skills classes are suitable for ages 6 and older. The department also offers multiple weeks of the Glide and Slide ice skating camp over the summer.

Lacrosse (Boys)

Shaker Heights Youth Lacrosse (Boys) 
This is a great opportunity for beginners to be exposed to and learn the game of lacrosse. The two divisions are 3rd & 4th Grade (Half field 7v7) and 5th & 6th Grade (Full field 10v10). Please know that boys younger than 2nd Grade are welcome to participate up to the coaches and parents discretion , really as long as it is safe for the player and isn't a distraction for the team.

Shaker Rec Programs

The Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers a wide variety of opportunities for school-age children to learn a new sport, refine their skills, and prepare for team, league, or club participation. Many programs are offered year-round, and a variety of sports specialty camps are offered during the summer. Shaker Heights school district families receive resident pricing for all programs.

Soccer

Shaker Youth Soccer Association (SYSA)

As Shaker’s premier soccer club, SYSA provides year round, developmentally appropriate soccer programs from introductory skills to premier level, starting at 4 years old and extending through high school. Our Recreation program encourages skill and tactical development and includes one practice per week and games. Our Competitive Travel League includes twice weekly practices and league games; all teams are assigned a Professional Coach. We also offer skills training clinics and Summer Camps.

The Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers soccer programs during the spring and summer including Micro Soccer (ages 4-5), Mini Kickers (ages 4-5), Intro Skills (Grades K-2), and Mighty Kickers (Grades 1-2). Mini Kickers and Mighty Kickers are offered in partnership with the Shaker Youth Soccer Association.

Swimming

Shaker Sharks Swimming Team

Shaker Sharks is a year-round competitive swim program. We teach competitive swimming skills to swimmers grade 1-12. Practices are generally in the evenings. Contact the swim team office to schedule a try-out. Swimmers must be able to complete a 25 yard length of the pool freestyle and a 25 yard length of the pool backstroke for the try-out without stopping. We feel we have a great program and would love to have you join us!

The Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers American Red Cross swim lessons year-round for children in grades K-6. Summer classes are held at the Thornton Park pool, and fall, winter, and spring classes are held at the Woodbury Elementary School pool.

Tennis

Shaker Heights Recreation Department

The Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers tennis programs during the spring, summer, and fall including Tennis for Two with Parent (ages 4-7), Starter Tennis (grades 1-3), and Youth Lessons (grades 3-6). The department also offers multiple weeks of beginner tennis camp over the summer.

Wrestling

Shaker Raider Wrestling Club
The Shaker Raider Wrestling Club is open to all students grades K-6 and develops discipline and confidence. Practices will encourage strength, conditioning and agility training. The club's emphasis includes teaching wrestling as well as doing best to ensure that all club members find the experience worthwhile.
