International Baccalaureate is an approach to teaching and learning that engages students actively while encouraging them to think deeply, and take action in their own lives. Through the programme students become internationally-minded thinkers and inquirers, who ask questions and seek answers with a global perspective. The IB programme fosters a love for learning by nurturing students’ natural curiosity. The curriculum is a rigorous, inquiry-based programme that empowers students to take action to create a better, more peaceful world.

The Primary Years Programme

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for children ages 3-12. The PYP at Onaway Elementary integrates the Shaker Heights School district curriculum and the Ohio Academic State Standards with the principles of the IB programme. The teachers work collaboratively to plan units of study which are centered around the PYP’s six themes. The units and lessons are designed to meet the physical, emotional, social and intellectual needs of all students.

The PYP encourages students to understand their own identity, learning style and interests. It promotes the development of an international perspective and awareness.
