Welcome to the School Counseling Department of Shaker Heights Middle School. We look forward to bein gyour 7th and 8th grade school counselors at Shaker Middle School. School Counselor Statement Philosophy
The school counseling department at Shaker Heights City Schools provides a comprehensive program designed to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of students at each grade level. The School Counselor acts as a resource person, a coordinator between teachers, parents and students, and as an advisor to the student. Each student is assigned to a counselor and remains with that counselor, allowing them to establish a working relationship. Counselors seek to understand the expectations and concerns of both students and parents and work together closely to make the school experience a rish and rewarding one for each student.
School counselors positively impact student academic and social/emotional development in many ways, including:
Working collaboratively with parents and staff to plan students' academic program and schedule
Providing students and families with support services and other community resources
Promoting positive school culture and climate through various awareness activities
Acting as a liaison between the home, school and community agencies/providers
Works with teachers and parents to provide helpful suggestions to support academic success and well-being
Providing brief solution-focused individual and small group counseling
Students are assigned to counselors by student last name as follows:
Students may make an appointment with their counselor or drop in. A teacher, administrator or parent may also refer students to their counselor. If assistance is needed and the assigned counselor is not available, students can feel free to ask another counselor for help. Parents are also free to contact the school counselors with questions during regular school hours.
For meeting requests, students and parents may submit a Google Form (see links below) to contact or request appointments with their school counselors.
