There are six units at each grade level - one for each theme. Kindergarten only has four units. Each unit of inquiry has guiding precepts: a central idea, lines of inquiry and the identification of key concepts. Below is the way a sample unit of inquiry would be outlined on the POI. This is the fourth grade unit for "Where we are in place and time."
Central Idea: Challenges and opportunities drive immigration and migration.
Key Concepts: Perspective, causation
Related Concepts: Exploration, consequences, impact
Lines of Inquiry:
- Conflict between groups of people
- Reasons and ways people relocate
- Personal accounts of immigration and emigration
