Update on Gifted Education Planning and Policy

In July 2017, the Ohio Department of Education implemented revised operating standards for identifying and serving students who are gifted. As defined by the state, a gifted student “performs or shows potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment.” These rules provide districts with increased flexibility in serving gifted students while also ensuring they receive quality services.

The Ohio Department of Education also provided guidance to public districts on implementing these revised operating standards in August 2017. Although the state’s standards are helpful, Shaker Heights Schools also must balance our aspirations of equity, excellence and exploration.

Feedback on Gifted Education

We appreciate your constructive feedback as we work to create a plan for students who are identified as gifted. Please visit our online feedback form. All feedback will be shared with the Gifted Education Workgroup as an agenda item at each monthly meeting, beginning January 2018.

Please check back on this page for dates of upcoming Gifted Education Workgroup meetings. We welcome you to observe our meetings, though we ask that you email Lisa Gibson if you plan to observe so that we can make any necessary space accommodations.
