2018 MAC Scholars Awards
May 17, 2018—Congratulations to the Shaker Heights High School Minority Achievement Committee Scholars honored today at the 2018 MAC Scholars Awards program. The MAC Scholars Program was founded in 1990 and involves high-achieving African-American male juniors and seniors who act as mentors. The MAC Scholars are models of high academic achievement and leadership for younger students.

The MAC Scholars were joined by guest speaker Dr. Cullen Buie, a former MAC Scholar, SHHS graduate and current Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He told the students, "It's not enough to be good at what you do. You must be great. The world needs you to be great."

A special congratulations to the seven graduating MAC Scholar seniors—Dan Bickerstaff, Will Clawson, Kayin Claytor, Malik Joseph, Myson Kidd, Jalan Morgan and Justin Phillips—and to the Gold Medal winner freshman Dalton Mosley, who raised his GPA this year from a 2.9 to a 4.0. The group also honored longtime advisor Mary Lynne McGovern, who will retire at the end of this school year, following 28 years with the MAC Scholars program. "This has been a labor of love, pure and genuine for the past 28 years," Mrs. McGovern told the audience.
