Shaker Latin Conquers Troy During National Latin Convention

July 31, 2017 — Fifteen Shaker Latin students along with teachers Nora Murphy and Adam Fletcher traveled to Troy, Alabama as part of the Ohio delegation to participate in the 64th National Latin Convention. 1600 students spent the week competing in academic, artistic and athletic competitions, attending colloquia sessions, supporting their states during Spirit competitions, sleeping minimally and meeting and renewing friendships with students from across the country.

Finishing in the top 10 in their level:

Rising Senior Gautam Apte placed 2nd in Classical Greek, 4th in Sight Latin, 5th in the Marathon and was a member of the Ohio Upper Level Competitive Certamen team which finished in 7th place.

Rising Freshman Max Carroll placed 2nd in Greek Life and Literature.

Rising Senior Andrew Frye placed 4th in Classical Greek and 9th in Small Models.

Rising Freshman Blaise Johnson finished 1st in Novice Open Certamen.

Recent Graduate Sam Katz finished 1st in Classical Greek scoring the highest overall score on the exam at any level. He placed 2nd in Greek Derivatives, Reading Comprehension-Poetry, Games, 3rd in Dolls, 6th in Academic Heptathlon, 8th in Latin Vocabulary and Mythology and was the captain of the 7th place Upper Level Certamen team. Sam also received the Doris L. Kays Scholarship, a $1500 award recognizing his scholastic and certamen achievements.

Rising Freshman Colin Lamb finished 10th in Greek Life and Literature as well as Games.

Rising Freshman Owen Lockwood finished 5th in Novice Open Certamen and 9th in Large Models.

Recent Graduate Jordan Pazol finished 5th in Classical Greek and 6th in Greek Life and Literature.

Rising Sophomore Matt Schiavone finished 2nd in the 100-yard Medley, the 50-yard Breaststroke, the 50-yard Freestyle and 6th in Classical Greek.

Rising Senior Gabe Sekeres finished 2nd in Classical Greek, 3rd in Advanced Open Certamen, 7th in Shot Put and 10th in Sight Latin Prose and Hellenic History.

Rising Sophomore Hannah Shane finished 2nd in Decorative Stitching.

Rising Senior Julia Shin finished 3rd in Couples Costume, 4th in Classical Greek, Charcoal Drawing and Impromptu Art, 6th in Essay, 7th in Greek Derivatives and Arcylic/Oil Painting.

Rising Freshman Mitchell Stiefel finished 5th in Academic Heptathlon and 10th in Mosaics.

Rising Senior Jason Suh finished 1st in the 50-yard Butterfly, 2nd in Classical Greek and the 50-yard Breaststroke, 3rd in Couples Costume and the 50-yard Freestyle and 9th in Greek Derivatives.
