February 2019 IB in Action — Mercer Elementary School Celebrates African American History Month

Last year, Mercer Elementary School launched Heroes with Heart, a Black History Month history project for any student wishing to participate. The project was open to any student who wanted to learn more about an African American Hero with Heart. Last year, more than 45 students participated, so the school decided to offer the project again. For Heroes with Heart, students choose their own hero and share why and how that person demonstrates an attribute in the IB Learner Profile. In the projects pictured below, second-grade student Priscilla Gomez (from Mr. DiScenna's class) made a game about NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson and third-grade student Kevin Frazier (from Ms. Feinstein's class) very carefully researched and drew a picture of Jerry Lawson, a home video gaming pioneer in the electronics industry.

Stop in the Mercer Action Gallery this month to see which heroes students selected and what they learned about them!
