Four SHHS Student Artists Win National Medals in Scholastic Art Competition

March 15, 2019—Congratulations to Shaker Heights High School student artists Jaia Briggs, Maria Maldonado, Aaliyah Williams and Cole Wade on their achievements at the national level of the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. This is the first time that Shaker Heights High School has had four students recognized at this level.

  • Senior portfolio student Cole Wade received a gold medal for printmaking “Stigma.” Cole will pursue a degree in the fine arts at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art)
  • Senior portfolio student Jaia Briggs received a silver medal for her painting, “Ebonee.” Jaia will be attending the Cleveland Institute of Art and pursuing a degree in the fine arts.
  • Senior portfolio student Maria Maldonado received a silver medal for her painting “In the Mirror.” Maria also will pursue a degree in the fine arts next year and is finalizing her choice of school from the top art institutions.
  • Junior painting student Aaliyah Williams received a silver medal for her painting “Diametrically Opposed.”

Nearly 340,000 works of art and writing were submitted to the 2019 Scholastic Awards. Our students’ work was selected by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts for excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Receiving a National Medal places our students within the top 1% of all submissions!

Gold Key winners and their teachers are invited to attend the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 6. Cole's work will also be displayed with the other Gold Key recipients in New York City at the National Exhibition.
