Board Selects Dr. Glasner as Next Superintendent

David GlasnerMarch 14, 2019—The Shaker Heights Board of Education has selected Dr. David Glasner as the next Superintendent of the Shaker Heights City School District. He succeeds Dr. Stephen M. Wilkins, who has served as Interim Superintendent since July 1, 2018.

“Dr. Glasner possesses the passion, intellect and vision to lead our District to new levels of excellence,” said Board President Jeffrey Isaacs. “Time and again, Dr. Glasner has stepped up and shown a willingness to take on big challenges. We know the entire community will join us in committing to make his tenure a success.”

Dr. Glasner, who will assume his new role July 1, is the Interim Principal of Shaker Heights High School and the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Shaker Heights Schools. As Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Glasner is responsible for development and implementation of District curriculum and instructional practices. Dr. Glasner also served as the Principal of Shaker Heights Middle School from July 2014-June 2018. Dr. Glasner lives in the Mercer neighborhood with his wife, Elana, and three children.

Prior to joining Shaker Heights Schools, Dr. Glasner served as principal of the Urban Assembly Academy of Government and Law, a public high school in New York. He was also a high school social studies teacher with the New York City Department of Education. Dr. Glasner holds a B.A. and an M.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in social studies education from Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as administrative certification from the College of Saint Rose. He earned his doctorate in Urban Education at Cleveland State University. Dr. Glasner is himself an IB Diploma graduate of Richmond Montgomery High School, Rockville, MD, and he is an Eagle Scout.

“I am truly grateful and humbled by the confidence the Board and the Shaker community has placed in me,” Dr. Glasner said. “I look forward to working together toward our common goal of providing a high-quality education for all of our students.”

With the help of a search consultant and after substantial community input, the Board undertook an intensive national search process to find the candidate who is best positioned to build upon the District’s rich tradition of academic excellence. This week alone, close to 500 students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff and members of the community participated in small group sessions or public forums with the two finalists. Hundreds more viewed the finalists’ presentations via video and filled out online feedback forms.

“We thank the hundreds of community members who participated in focus groups, attended public forums or called or emailed Board members,” Mr. Isaacs said. “Together, we as a community have come up with a leader who will be an outstanding superintendent.”
