The Shakerite Wins Columbia Scholastic Press Association Silver Crown Award

March 29, 2019—Congratulations to The Shakerite, the Shaker Heights High School print and online magazine, which was named a Silver High School Hybrid General Magazine by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The Columbia University-based CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs.

"As always, Shakerite editors stand on the shoulders of those who sustained and propelled the program before them. I am honored and awed to work alongside them every day," says The Shakerite adviser Natalie Sekicky, who adds that the award also recognizes the efforts of former Editor-in-Chief Grace Lougheed ('18). Grace was responsible for executing the redesign that gave The Shakerite's quarterly, substantive coverage a smartly designed magazine home.

Ms. Sekicky continues, "The Shakerite also owes profound thanks to former adviser Sally Schwartz, whose students earned CSPA recognition long before I came to Shaker. My students have only built on the excellent foundation she and her staffs established. And I cannot overstate how essential the community's support is to our student journalists."

This year, 1,181 digital, print newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2017-2018 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2019 Crown Awards, which are given for overall excellence.

The Shakerite was one of five Silver High School Hybrid General Magazines to win the award. This award is The Shakerite’s fifth Crown Awards in six year.

Congratulations to the entire student staff of The Shakerite and to Ms. Sekicky!
