December 26, 2018—Art students from Shaker Heights High School earned more awards than any other local high school in both the Scholastic Art Competition and in the Cleveland Clinic’s eXpressions Art program. Seventy-six student works received awards in the Scholastic Art Competition, a regional and national competition recognizing art that demonstrates originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision (jjmp to a list of Scholastic Art Award-winners). Seven students earned awards in the Cleveland Clinic’s eXpressions Art program, an educational initiative that engages middle and high school students in the creative exploration of science and medicine (jump to a list of eXpressions award-winners). In the Scholastic Art competition, Shaker students earned an American Visions Award, 19 Gold Keys, 21 Silver Keys and 36 Honorable Mentions. The students also won five Portfolio Awards, including one Gold, two Silver and two Honorable Mentions. Students who received Gold Keys will automatically be considered for national awards.

The awards ceremony for Gold Key winners will be held on Saturday, January 19 at the Cleveland Institute of Art. An exhibition of all winning artwork will be on display January 19 through February 1 at The Cleveland Institute of Art Reinberger Galleries. 

In the eXpressions Art program, Shaker student works were among the more than 1,400 art, language, and math projects from 52 schools submitted as a part of eXpressions. A panel of art and science professionals used four criteria to evaluate each art submission: interpretation, presentation, creativity, and initiative. The pieces selected by the judges were awarded four levels of special recognition: Blue Ribbon, Red Ribbon, White Ribbon, and Honorable Mention.

Award-winning projects will be displayed in the 2019 eXpressions Art, Language, and Math eXhibition at the Great Lakes Science Center. The opening, including a formal program and reception, will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.
