Shaker Heights High School Students Compete at National Latin Convention

August 2, 2018—A delegation of 18 students and Latin and Greek teacher Mrs. Nora Murphy traveled to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio from July 22-28 to compete, learn and play at the 2018 National Latin Convention. More than 1,800 students and teachers from across the country attended the convention. The Shaker students were part of a 162-member Ohio delegation.  
 
Shaker students won several top awards. Winners included: 
  • Gautam Apte (‘18)—2nd place* Classical Greek IV; 10 place Mythology V; 7th place Sight Latin Poetry
  • Magdalena Bowne, Freshman—2nd place Black Pencil Drawing
  • Theodora Bowne, Junior—(wrongly scored as a senior) placed well in Classical Art, Mythology and Latin Derivatives. 
  • Craig Bush, Junior—6th place Classical Greek II; 7th place Greek Derivatives; 10th place Latin Poetry Reading Comprehension III; 10th place Social Media competition
  • Max Carroll, Sophomore—9th place Classical Greek I; 4th place jewelry; 5th place 50-yard Freestyle; 5th place 50-yard Breaststroke
  • Will Corbin, Freshman—8th place Marathon
  • Charlie Forbes, Junior—7th place Constructed Maps; 6th place Marathon; 7th place 800 Meter
  • Blaise Johnson, Sophomore—9th place Classical Greek I
  • Owen Lockwood, Sophomore—7th place Classical Greek I; 10th place Mosaics; 1st place 100 Meter, 3rd place 200 Meter; 4th place High Jump; 5th place Shot Put; 6th place Long Jump; 2nd place in the Talent Competition
  • Brian Love, Junior—5th place Classical Greek II; 8th place Greek Derivatives
  • Meredith Modlin (‘18)—2nd place Impromptu Art; 4th place Constructed Charts; 9th place Cartoons

*Jason Suh, Gautam Apte and Julia Shin swept the Advanced Greek Test, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
