Two Free Upcoming Workshops on Equity

April 11, 2018—The Equity Task Force presents two opportunities for members of the Shaker Schools and broader Shaker Heights community to learn more about equity, racial bias, disparity and creating an equitable future. Both opportunities are free of charge.

Let’s Get REAL about Race in Shaker

Exploring race is still something that many avoid, yet the race-based issues we face as a country and right here in Shaker aren’t going away. This one-session, two-hour workshop will enable participants to recognize some of their own biases along with race-based institutional and systemic barriers that still plague us. Participants will engage in candid conversations and learn how to facilitate more productive discussions about race. This session engages participants in a high-level of interaction.

Select ONE workshop to attend:

  • April 24, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the High School Senior Lounge
  • May 6, 3-5 p.m. in the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building

This session is free, but registration is required as space is limited. Please RSVP to Dr. Marla Robinson, Shaker Heights City Schools Chief of Staff, [email protected].

Leading for Equity in Shaker: A Learning Lab

This four-part, in-depth exploration of equity begins with a six-hour retreat, followed by three 2.5-hour sessions. Participants will reflect as individuals and meet in small groups. The sessions will also include caucusing, in which participants who are of color and those who are white meet separately with a facilitator to discuss issues of race and equity. This workshop is designed for those who want an intensive experience on the dynamics of diversity, understanding power and privilege, defining the four levels of racism and learning how to lead in our school and broader community with an equity lens. This experience is free, but participants must apply.

The sessions include:

  • May 12, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: Orientation and Introduction to Power and Privilege
  • May 22, 5:30-8:30 p.m.: Interpersonal Racism
  • May 29, 5:30-8:30 p.m.: Institutional Racism
  • June 13, 5:30-8:30 p.m.: Structural/Systemic Racism and Co-Creating an Equitable Future
All sessions will take place in the High School Senior Lounge. Applications accepted through April 24. All selected participants will be notified by April 27. Apply online here.
