Senior Rachel Podl Earns Third Place in Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest

February 7, 2018—Congratulations to Shaker Heights High School senior and student body president Rachel Podl, who earned third place in the 28th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest, sponsored by East View United Church of Christ. Rachel was one of nine students from Greater Cleveland to earn a scholarship award for writing an essay that answered the question: What would Martin Luther King say about NFL players taking a knee during the National Anthem?
For her work, Rachel earned a $100 scholarship. Since the contest began, the Church has donated $37,000 in scholarships to local high school students who write essays on topics that pertain to relevant social issues.
