MLK Day of Service Builds “Beloved Community”

Hundreds of Shaker Heights City School District students from every grade level turned a day off into a “day on” at the first districtwide MLK Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

About 600 attendees participated in a variety of projects serving the homeless and home-insecure of Greater Cleveland. They knotted warm fleece blankets, assembled personal care and hygiene kits for teens and adults, collected socks, and wrote heartfelt messages of caring to remind recipients that they are part of what Dr. King called the “beloved community.”

The event was sponsored by PTO Council CommUnity Builders, the Shaker Schools Foundation and Game On! Sports 4 Girls in partnership with HandsOn Northeast Ohio and Bellefaire JCB’s Homeless and Missing Youth Program.
