SHHS Crew Team Names Boat for Ken Schroeder

The Shaker Heights High School crew team recently held a naming ceremony for two new boats in their fleet. One of the boats was named “SHAKER REI6N” in honor of the first graduating class of a combined men’s and women’s crew team that has rowed together since entering as freshmen.

The other boat was named “The Ken Schroeder,” in honor of an eight-year member of the District’s transportation staff. For the past several years, Schroeder has assisted the Shaker crew team by driving the boat trailer to the many out-of-town weekend regattas in both the fall and spring seasons. He also provides maintenance and safety checks for the boat trailer and equipment trailer, and has given countless hours of support to the coaches and students on the team.

Schroeder also plays a key supporting role in his day job, according to Erin Spevak, the District’s assistant transportation supervisor. “Ken works diligently to maintain our fleet of 50 buses and other assorted district equipment by completing needed repairs and helping with regular preventative maintenance, as well as helping to train and certify new drivers,” she says.

When he’s not cheering on the crew team, Schroeder also is a member of a hot air balloon team called Endeavor and Eclipse, which has competed throughout the Great Lakes states and as far away as Albuquerque, New Mexico.
