SHHS Student Brings Together Champions For Charity

Andrew Roth, a rising senior at Shaker Heights High School, has a passion for soccer, having played since he was a youngster with Shaker Youth Soccer Association. He also has a passion for helping others and giving back to his community.

Happily, Roth found a way to combine his interests by launching a non-profit organization called Champions for Charity, whose mission is to empower young athletes to make a difference in their community by playing the sport they love.

On August 13, Champions for Charity is joining forces with the Kevin Ekeberg Shaker Soccer Fest and Alumni Game by organizing a soccer tournament with brackets for kids, teens, and adults starting at 1 pm. Other activities will include youth soccer skills contests, raffle prizes, and food concessions.

The event culminates with the annual student vs. alumni men’s soccer game at 5:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit No Stomach for Cancer. Former Shaker soccer player Kevin Ekeberg,’09, passed away in 2015 from stomach cancer.

In the future, Roth’s goal is to bring athletes of all ages together in tournament play, where teams have the opportunity to win money for charities of their choosing. He recently brought on board two vice presidents to the organization, Shaker juniors Wyatt Eisen and Liam Prendergast, who will expand the tournament offerings to their sports of choice - hockey and basketball, respectively.

“Part of what Shaker means to me is giving back to your community. Building that community feeling is what makes Shaker special,” says Roth.
