Shaker Schools Authorized for IB Middle Years Programme

First District in Greater Cleveland to Serve Pre-K - 12

All Shaker Heights City Schools can now proudly fly the International Baccalaureate flag.

The Shaker Heights City School District has received official authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to implement the IB Middle Years Programme for all students in grades 5-10. This brings to fruition the District’s initiative to provide International Baccalaureate programming to all Shaker students in grades pre-K through 12.

Shaker Heights is the first school district in Greater Cleveland, and one of only eight districts across the nation, to offer IB programming to students in all grade levels throughout the district.

Shaker Heights High School was named an International Baccalaureate World School in 2010 and graduated its first cohort of International Baccalaureate Diploma candidates in 2012. All five K-4 elementary schools in Shaker have fully implemented the IB program since 2013 and are designated as International Baccalaureate World Schools. Woodbury Elementary School and Shaker Heights Middle School now also join the ranks of IB World Schools.

International Baccalaureate is an internationally recognized educational program with a rigorous curriculum, featuring a global focus, creative problem solving, hands-on projects, inquiry-based learning, and community service.

“I am very appreciative of the hard work and efforts of all of our faculty and staff members over the past several years that have brought us to this point,” said Superintendent Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., Ed.D. “The result is that all of our students will benefit from this rigorous and holistic approach to education, which will help them to become self-directed learners as well as compassionate global citizens.”
