The annual Shaker Heights High School Theatre Ensemble Show opens on April 30. This year all three Ensembles are adapting The Tempest by William Shakespeare to present Rough Magic.
Considered a romance and a green-world play rather than a comedy, The Tempest is perhaps Shakespeare’s most magical work. Rather than performing the text of the play – or offering a modern version – the ensembles have spent the year connecting to the characters’ circumstances and finding universal themes and stories. A type of devised theatre, Ensemble performances are new works that are created by the students.
A highlight of the evening will be four original songs written collaboratively by the ensembles. The production also features movement pieces, illusion, and puppetry.
The free senior adult preview is at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 30. Performances of the Spring Ensemble Show are at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2. All take place in the Large Auditorium at Shaker Heights High School, 15911 Aldersyde Drive, Shaker Heights.
Tickets are by donation and can be reserved about a week before the show online at http://www.tix.com/ or purchased in the lobby.
