5 Shaker Students Named Winners in Playwriting Festival

Five budding playwrights from the Shaker schools are winners in the 2015 Marilyn Bianchi Kids’ Playwriting Festival, now in its 37th year. Hundreds of plays were submitted by students throughout Cuyahoga County in grades 1-12. Only 21 plays were selected in this year’s festival.

The students’ winning plays are:

“Playwrights in the Making” by Mary Grace Wilkinson, grade 5

“Okay” by Maria White, sophomore

“The Elephant” by Ruth Geye, junior

“The Call” by Alexandra Harris, senior

“Members Only” by Julianna White, senior

“Playwrights in the Making” and “Okay” will be performed at Kids’ Fest at Dobama Theatre, June 5-7. “The Call” and “Members Only” will be performed as part of “Summer Shorts” at Cain Park on July 22. For details on performance times, visit http://dobama.org/.

“Okay,” “The Elephant,” and “Members Only,” were first produced at New Stages 33, which featured one-act plays written, acted and directed by students at the High School.

All four of the High School students are enrolled in the Dramatic Literature & Writing class taught by Christine McBurney, director of the playwriting program at the High School.
