Woodbury's "Creating Change" Event A Masterpiece

On Thursday, April 28, Woodbury School in Shaker Heights raised more than $7,900 during its third all-school event mixing art, social justice and delicious tapas from local purveyors. "Woodbury Creating Change" featured more than a thousand handmade ceramic tapas plates for sale, along with appetizers and small desserts donated by local bakers, chefs, restaurants and markets.

During the past several months, all of Woodbury's students have been shaping, glazing and firing handmade ceramic tapas plates as part of their regular art class curriculum, under the guidance of Woodbury art teachers Deanna Clemente Milne and Robert Bognar. In addition, the Woodbury staff members and community members made and glazed plates during several "art-making days." All told, more than 1.100 plates were made and glazed.

In addition to the more than 1,100 individual plates, there was a raffle to purchase sets of 4 plates created by local artists.

Proceeds from Woodbury Creating Change benefited three student-selected charities: EDWINS (local), Animal Protective League (national), and UNICEF (international).

The Woodbury student body was asked to nominate charities. The Woodbury Creating Change Student Committee then researched the nominations and narrowed the list to five. These students created videos about the 5 different charities and showed them to the student body. Every student voted which determined the final three.

Tapas were donated by Academy Tavern, Aladdin’s, AVI, Batuqui on Larchmere, Choolah, Cleveland Tiffin, Dewey’s Coffee and Popcorn, EDWINS, The Fairmount, Felice Urban Café, Fresh Market, Gigi's on Fairmount, Gimme Java, Heinen’s Downtown, J.Pistone Marketplace, Jack’s Deli and Restaurant, Katz Club Diner, Lucy's Sweet Surrender, Luna Bakery & Café, Marsha’s Catering, Melt, Mister Brisket, Murray Hill Market, Olivia Rose Confections, On the Rise, Pizzazz, Pope’s Kitchen llc, Sasa, Simply Delicious Pies, Stone Over, Swerve, TOLI, WOW Cookies, Yours Truly, Zack Bruell's restaurants, Zanzibar and Zoss.

Woodbury Creating Change is led by program founder Deanna Clemente Milne, along with a 18-member volunteer committee comprising of Woodbury staff and parents in a unique collaboration. Funds from the Woodbury PTO and the Shaker Schools Foundation provided seed money for Woodbury Creating Change.
