March 2017 Newsletter: Reading Raiders Combine Literacy and Fun

On Thursdays after school, a group of students from the Middle School visits Boulevard Elementary to mentor second- and third-graders in a program called Reading Raiders. The Middle School students work one-on-one with the younger students to bolster their reading skills by reading stories aloud together, performing readers’ theatre, and enjoying poetry.

Middle School teacher Katrina Holmes, who coordinates the program, says, “While the younger students are getting word work practice and expanding their reading fluency, the older students are gaining knowledge about what it takes to be a leader. And of course, they’re also just having fun together!”

The Reading Raiders program was started by Middle School teacher Susan Reese, who initially brought the program to Onaway school. The teachers hope to expand the program in the future.
